Harry's family moved from Franklin, PA in 1911 to Stockton, CA where he completed grammar school and the first three years of high school. In 1918 he moved to Berkeley, CA where he finished high school and then attended the University of California where he earned his BA and MA.
He was teaching in Nevada City, CA when he was offered the principalship of John Muir Elementary School in Fresno.
Harry Buckalew was a principal of Muir, Einstein, Fremont, Jackson, Lowell and Jefferson Elementary schools in Fresno during his 41 year tenure with Fresno Unified School District. He retired in 1967.
He was an avid wildflower photographer and had a file of more than 5,000 color film photos of which 67 were reproduced in major publications.
He was a founding member of the Californa Elementary School Principals Association and of its central section. He served as director of the Fresno County chapter of the Fresno County Junior Red Cross. He was also a founding director of the Sierra Hospital in Fresno.
He was a member of Las Palmas Masonic Lodge No. 366 and served as its Master in 1947. He was also a worthy patron 1931 of Fresno chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
