Carl E. Appleby Jr. of Allen Avenue died Thursday at a Biddeford hospital after a long illness.
He was born in Portland, the son of Carl E. Sr. and M. Josephine Gray Appleby, and attended local schools.
Mr. Appleby was employed in the construction business and served as foreman. He also was employed at the Portland Stove Foundry.
During World War II, he served with the Navy in the Pacific. He was a member and past commander of the American Legion Post 17 and was a member of the Woodfords VFW.
Mr. Appleby was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Riverside Golf Course.
He was predeceased by a son, Stephen, and a daughter, Patricia.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Jean Porter and Rhonda Gail Appleby, both of Florida; a sister, Barbara Gilbreath of Portland; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Hay & Peabody, 749 Congress St. Burial will follow in Forest City Cemetery.
