Alma 'Lorraine' Gartner 1920-2015 Alma 'Loarraine' Gartner passed away on June 28, 2015, at the age of 95, after a short time at Fairmont Rehab Hospital. She was born February 5, 1920, in McClusky, ND, to Jacob and Pauline (Wahl) Stroh. Lorraine went to school at the Schrunk Township through 8th grade and then helped to care for a school teacher's two girls. She met her husband, Reuben Gartner, when taking a trip to California with her aunt and uncle, Matt and Annie Schlecht. They had extra room and took him along as a passenger. He stayed in California to work but soon returned to North Dakota and started courting Lorraine. They were married on October 10, 1939 and the first year helped her parents on their farm. That next year, they purchased the former Wahl farm near McClusky, ND and farmed for 10 years. They continued to own and lease out their land for the last 65 years and made annual trips to ND for 40 years. While farming there they attend the John's Lake Mennonite Church, where Lorraine had been baptized in 1935. On Thanksgiving Day, in 1950, they moved to Lodi on Eureka Street. They lived there for 61 years and loved their neighbors and developed many lasting friendships. They especially enjoyed the yearly Neighborhood Watch get together. In 2011, they moved to Ashley Place. Lorraine loved canning fruit, knitting and sewed and made many lap blankets for the church to take to nursing homes. She was a member, since 1950, of the Vinewood Community Church in Lodi. There she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School and Wednesday night classes. She was excited to be able to attend the Vinewood Community Church 100th Year Anniversary Celebration and Male Chorus Program this past Spring. Lorraine is survived by two brother-in-laws: Gene Seibel of Lodi and Willis (Ardella) Gartner of Bismarck, ND; two nephews: Dennis Gartner of MD and Kelly Gartner of ND; seven nieces Carla Schimke of Lodi, Pam Suess of Modesto, Mary Lou Bergman, Becky Haag, Vonnie Gartner, of ND, Lyndell Redington of KS, and Connie Roller of UT. She was preceded in death by her husband, of 72 years, Reuben Gartner, parents Jacob and Pauline Stroh, and sister Velda Seibel, all of Lodi. The viewing will be held at Lodi Funeral Home, at 725 S. Fairmont Ave, Lodi, CA. on Monday, July 6, from 10 AM to 5 PM. Committal will be at 10 AM, July 7, at Cherokee Memorial Park. A Celebration of Life service will follow at Vinewood Community Church, 1900 W. Vine St., Lodi, at 11 AM with Pastors Rod Suess and Dwight Friesen officiating. Donations may be made, in Lorraine Gartner's name, to the Vinewood Community Church.
