J.L. Curtis Laid To Rest On Wednesday
Veteran Engineer Of Santa Fe Succumbs In L.A. Hospital
Funeral services for James Lee Curtis, 59, years old, veteran Santa Fe engineer who died in Los Angeles Sunday morning, were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Drumm Mortuary chapel, with Rev. Cecil Watson of the Baptist Church in charge. Interment was in Desert View Cemetery and graveside services were conducted by the B.P.O. Elks Lodge.
Mr. Curtis served as engineer on the Third District of the Albuquerque Division, and on the evening of November 10 he suffered a heart attack on the engine in Williams. He was confined in that city several days until his condition improved enough so he could be taken to the Santa Fe hospital in Los Angeles.
CAME HERE IN 1910
James Lee Curtis was born in Manchester, Scott County, Illinois, on December 9, 1882. He started his railroad career as a machinist helper at La Junta, Colo., on October 11, 1907. He came to Winslow as a fireman in September, 1910, and was promoted to engineer on January 15, 1920.
He was a member of the local Elks lodge and of the engineer's brotherhood.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Barbara, in a nurse's school at Everett, Wash., and Mrs. Earl Russell, who is reported to her husband and family for have left two weeks ago with Juneau, Alaska; a son, James, stationed at Kessler Field, Miss., in the Army air corps; three sisters, Mrs. Garland Lish, Yorba Linda, Calif., Mrs. Mary Harper and Mrs. Florence Elliot, Dallas, Tex., and two brothers, Morris and Lester of Missouri.
