Ronald served in the US Army during World War II June 1942-November 1945 in the 76th Division Infantry. He received a Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, a Good Conduct Medal, a Combat Infantry badge, four European Theater Campaign medals, and a WWII medal. After his service he joined the Iowa National Guard serving as Battalion S2, Battalion Assistant S3, and Platoon Leader. He served a total of 42 years of service.

Ronald married Ruth Frances Grindle on June 4, 1959 in Marion, Indiana. They are the parents of Denise, Steve, Leslie, Barb & Valerie.
