PLANTERSVILLE – Retired Sgt. 1st Class David Lawrence ""Sarge"" Babb passed peacefully in his sleep on Friday May 22, 2015, at his home after an extended illness. David, along with his twin brother Donald, was born March 15, 1937 in Bath, Maine, to Herbert Eugene Babb and Irma Small Babb. He joined the Marines in 1954, just days after his 17th birthday. After basic training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, he would serve in the 2nd Marine Division, 1st Battalion in the Philippines as security at the ammo dumps. He would also serve as an MP at Yokasuka Naval Base in Japan. After serving his country in the Marines for five years, he would return to Maine where he would meet and then marry his wife of 54 years, Nora Jones.

He enlisted in the Army in 1961, and was stationed at Ft. Stewart, Ga. before being transferred to Ft. Mason in France with the 553rd Engineering Battalion. He was fortunate to have his wife travel with him to most of his post assignments. His son Jeffrey was born while they were stationed in France. In 1965, he was assigned to Ft. Knox and was there briefly when his whole company was shipped to Long Binh, Vietnam with the 54th Ordnance. His daughter Carol would be born in Maine while he was away in Vietnam. After returning from Vietnam, he was stationed with the 94th Engineering Battalion at Nelingen Barracks in Germany. He served as a construction foreman with his Battalion. His youngest daughter, Patricia, was born during his assignment in Germany. After his service in Germany, he would be sent again to Vietnam, while his family stayed at Ft. Benning, Ga. After serving for a year in Vietnam, he would return to Ft. Benning where he would then be assigned as an advisor to the Reserve Engineering unit at the Army Reserve Base in Tupelo. In 1973, he would be sent to Camp Coiner Korea with the 44th Engineering Battalion, Company C, where he would serve for a year. Upon his return he would then be assigned to the 34th Engineering Battalion at Ft. Polk, Louisiana where he would serve as a Platoon Sergeant until his retirement in 1976.

After 20 years of service in the military, he would return to Plantersville to be with his family. He would go on to work briefly at Super Sagless in Tupelo. He then also served for several years as the property manager of Oak Grove Mobile Home Plantation in Plantersville. He would then go on to serve at the City of Tupelo Public Works Department as a mechanic and a welder. He would retire from ""the shop"" after becoming disabled in the early 2000s. David enjoyed working on motors of any kind and could often be found under the hood of a neighbor's vehicle trying to help them fix their engine problems. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and spending time with his grandsons.

A service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Ch. LTC. Jimmy A. Smith USA (Ret.) officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Lee Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and from noon-service time on Tuesday at the Tupelo Chapel. Holland Funeral Directors, Tupelo Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nora Jones Babb of Plantersville; his son, Jeffrey Babb of Brookhaven; and his daughter, Patricia Clark (Barry) of Saltillo; his sister Beverly Babb Marsters of Canton, Maine; four grandsons, Andrew Babb (Casey) of the Carolina Community, Dallas Babb of Plantersville, Brentt Floyd (Amber) of Plantersville and Dalton Floyd of Guntown; seven great-grandsons, Devin, Tristian, Jasper and Sebastian Babb and Bentley, Brohdie, and Briley Floyd; a special great-grandaughter, Taylor Kowalski; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Carol; his brothers, Donald and George; and his daughter, Carol Elaine in 2009.
