Marilyn Joyce Kirkhus Schroeder, 84, DeKalb, Illinois, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2015, at Bethany Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, DeKalb.

Born August 2, 1930, on a farm southeast of Leland, the daughter of Howard and Irene (Gunderson) Rierson, Marilyn married Ivan B. Kirkhus on December 16, 1950. After Ivan died February 28, 1988, Marilyn married Louis Schroeder on February 1, 1997. Louis died June 24, 2010.

Marilyn was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, spending her early years helping Ivan on the farm and entertaining friends and family. She loved to bake and kept the cookie jar filled with cookies for Ivan and her family. Some of the happiest times of her life were entertaining, going to dances at the Blue Moon and Long's Barn, and traveling with Ivan overseas and throughout the United States.

She was a piano and organ teacher for 40 years and enjoyed teaching her students to play and to love music. Marilyn was the church organist at Trinity Lutheran Church in DeKalb, St. John's Lutheran Church in Creston, and First Lutheran Church in Lee. For many years, she also played the organ for the Farm Bureau Dinner/Dance at NIU.

Marilyn was a longtime member of DeKalb County Farm Bureau. She was nominated to be the first woman Farm Bureau director in 1988 and played piano at the Illinois Farm Bureau IAAA Convention at the Palmer House. She served as the Farm Bureau's women's committee chairperson for 6 years and was a charter member of the DeKalb County Lady Landowners. Marilyn was a member of the DeKalb Women's Club, serving as president and on various other committees. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

She leaves two daughters, Darla (Doug) Massier of DeKalb and Debi Nicholson of Plettenberg Bay, South Africa; her beloved grandchildren, Sarah (Joe) Newby, Adam Massier, Laura Nicholson and Thomas Nicholson; great-grandson, Benjamin Newby; sisters, Lucille Orris and Margaret (Robert) Shumway; brother, Theodore (Cinda) Rierson; stepchildren, Sandra (Dr. Larry) Von Behren, Carol Brown and Steven (Michelle) Schroeder; and many dear friends who meant so much to her.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ivan Kirkhus; second husband, Louis Schroeder; parents; sister, Jeanette Rierson; and brother, Jerome Rierson.

For the past seven years, Marilyn was a resident at Bethany Health Care, where she was cared for with respect and compassion.

The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 4, at Anderson Funeral Home Ltd., DeKalb, with the Rev. Ray Krueger of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Anderson Funeral Home.

Burial will be private for family on Monday, July 6, at Union Cemetery, Steward.
