Isaac Dunham Kelley was a mariner who died at sea while transporting a load of ice from Boston to Alexandria, Virginia aboard the schooner Roxbury. Also drowned with Kelley were his brothers-in-law Johial Chase and Captain Hersey Crowell.

The monument was erected by Charlotte (Chase) Crowell to commemorate the deaths of several family members:

Capt. Warren Chase, Jr., who died of yellow fever in Savannah
Capt. Hersey Crowell, her husband; Johial Chase, her brother; and Isaac Kelley, who was married to her sister, Gabrelia Chase Kelley Quincy. Emeline (Baker) Chase, Warren Chase's wife, would later be added to the memorial.
