Louisa Morris Rutherfurd was the daughter of Lewis Morris Rutherfurd (1816-1892) and Margaret Chanler Stuyvesant(?-1890)a descendant of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant. Her mother, Margaret was the niece and adopted daughter of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant and Helena Rutherfurd Stuyvesant(Lewis Morris Rutherfurd's aunt). Her father Louis Morris Rutherfurd was a known scientist, astronomer, and inventor. "The Rutherfurd Crater" on the Moon is named after him.
Louisa Morris Rutherfurd was the sister of Stuyvesant Rutherfurd(1842-1907). He later changed his name to Rutherfurd Stuyvesant in 1847, as a provision under the will of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant, in order to transmit the Stuyvesant fortune.
Louisa Morris Rutherfurd was also the sister of Winthrop Rutherfurd (1862-1944) a New York society figure. He was secretly engaged to the railroad heiress Consuela Vanderbilt in 1895. He later married Alice Morton Rutherfurd in 1902 and constructed the 18,000 square foot brick manor home on the family estate in Allamuchy, NJ. After the death of his wife Alice, Winthrop married Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd in 1920. Lucy Mercer was known for her 1914 love affair with Franklin Delano Roosevelt, which could have ended his marriage to Eleanor as well as his political career.
Her sister Margaret Rutherfurd White, married Henry White a US diplomat. And her brother Lewis Morris Rutherfurd Jr. initiated the family's breeding of fox terrior dogs along with Winthrop Rutherfurd.
Louisa was nicknamed Lou Lou, Poodle and Ducky by family members and friends. Due to a serious illness, Louisa was confined to a sanatorium. She died on her birthday March 17, 1892 at the age of 37.
She was buried in the Rutherfurd family plot, Tranquility Cemetery, NJ near the family estate in Allamuchy, NJ
