NATICK - Michael J. Melville , 63, of Natick, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a heroic fivemonth battle with lung cancer.

He was the husband of Marilyn J. (Ash) Melville .

Born in Hartford, Conn., he was raised in Presque Isle, Maine, son of the late Edmund and Cecelia (Green) Melville , and had been a resident of Natick for the past 35 years.

Formerly employed by Sears for 22 years, Mr. Melville was an appliance technician associated with Jarvis Appliance in Wellesley, and he operated Mike's Appliance in Natick.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Vietnam War from 1961 until his honorable discharge in 1964.

A member of the Mapleton, Maine, ATV club, he enjoyed skiing and snowmobiling. Throughout his life he enjoyed his annual trips to Sunday River in Maine, visits to York Beach, Maine, and the time he spent at his brother-in-law's camp at Squapan Lake at the northern tip of Maine.

Known as a man who gave of himself unselfishly to his friends and neighbors, he spent his entire life quietly helping others.

Proud of his family, Mr. Melville was a devoted husband, loving father he and cherished and adored his two grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he leaves two children, Michael J. Melville Jr. and his wife, Paula, of Boylston and Michelle J. Tynan and her husband, Glen, of Grafton; two grandchildren, Shane Michael Tynan and Delaney Catherine Tynan; one brother, Raymond Melville of Oklahoma; three sisters, Laska Bull and her husband, Arden, of Troy, N.Y., Barbara Gray and husband, Everett, of Arkansas and Gail Scarborough and husband, Danny, of Alabama; his mother-in-law, Catherine Ash of Belmont; his brother-in-law, Walter Ash of Belmont; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be offered today, at 10 a.m., in St. Patrick's Church Natick.

Burial with military honors will follow in Glenwood Cemetery in South Natick.
