After the death of her father, Catherine and her mother moved to Fairfield County, Connecticut, where her much older sister, Fanny Havens Bissel (1821-1864), lived. Catherine credited this sister with encouraging her to write the diary. When the 1930 US Census was taken, Catherine was still living in Fairfield County, Connecticut.
Catherine never married. She dedicated her published diary to her "dear nieces and nephews and their descendants."
