Captian Woolsey was an Army Air Force officer and aviator. He served at the Mexican border in 1916, and in France during World War I (1917-18). While on a Good Will tour of South America, he was killed when his plane collided with another. His father, Bryon, donated the land for the Clinton Woolsey Memorial Airport, which was dedicated in 1935. Its terminal is made out of stones, and is located on Lighthouse Point Road between Northport and Leelanau State Park.
