William C. Lowes Sr.

William C. Lowes Sr., 85, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at the Indiana Masonic Home. He was a resident of Franklin and a former longtime resident of Indianapolis.

He was born June 27, 1916, in Johnson County. His parents were Charles William and Clara Annette (Willsey) Lowes. He married Evelyn R. Piel on Oct. 28, 1949, at the Zion United Church of Christ in Indianapolis. She survives. Other survivors include a son, William Charles Lowes Jr. of Zionsville; a daughter, Barbara Ann Lowes of Indianapolis; a grandson; a nephew; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

He was a graduate of Franklin Township Schools. He attended Wabash College and Indiana University and was a graduate of Butler University.

He began his education career at Nineveh Schools. He was later employed by Franklin Township Schools for three years, followed by Warren Central for three years. He was principal for the Madison-Marion-Hougland School Corp. for five years. He retired in 1982 from IPS, where he was involved in the guidance and vocational departments.

He was a member of Pleasant Lodge 134 in Acton, "Soul Journers," Indianapolis Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine and Acton Chapter 173 Order of Eastern Star. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a Kentucky Colonel. He also belonged to numerous educational organizations.

He was a U.S. Air Forces Medical Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the China-Burma-India Theater.

The Rev. Cleon Wright and Ted Schory will conduct a service at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Kresge Chapel at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the chapel, where a Masonic service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Burial will be at Acton Cemetery.
