Joseph Earl Templeton

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Joseph Earl Templeton , 91, of Bristol, Tenn., and formerly of the Manville community of Gate City, Va., died Sunday ( Feb. 28, 2010 ) at the Mountain Home Veterans Affairs Nursing Home in Johnson City .

Mr. Templeton is survived by his wife, Lucille Boughers Templeton of the home; sons, the Rev. Stephen “Steve” Templeton and wife, Brenda, of Manville, Va., and Dr. David Templeton and wife, Annette, of Gate City, Va.; one brother, James Alvin Templeton of Kingsport, and half-brother, Robert Templeton of Houma, La.; two half-sisters, Billie Quillen of Gate City and Louise Graham, of Bristol, Tenn.; one stepdaughter, Carolyn Huff and husband, Eddie, of Bluff City, and a stepson, Phil Boughers of Bluff City; three grandchildren, Joseph Templeton and wife, Lorie, of Lexington, Ky., David Templeton II and Hayley Templeton of Gate City; one stepgranddaughter, Melissa Pannell of Coeburn, Va.; five stepgrandsons, Ben Huff and Eddie Huff II, Tyler Boughers, Chester Boughers and Dillian Boughers, all of Bristol, Tenn., and two stepgreat-grandsons. He is also survived by a special niece, Teresa Templeton and family of Gate City .

He was preceded in death by his parents, Abram I. and Eliza B. Alley Templeton ; his first wife, Helen Mildred (Pendleton) Templeton ; and several brothers and sisters.

Mr. Templeton was a decorated veteran of World War II, having served in the Regular Army as a Staff Sgt. and Platoon Leader of “B” Co., 112th Regiment of the 28th Infantry Division. He was twice offered battlefield commissions, the last on the day before beginning his last mission. He was wounded in Normandy and again in the battle for Colmar , France . Among his decorations are the Combat Infantry Badge with Oak Leaf Cluster, two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star.

Mr. Templeton retired from Tennessee Eastman Company’s Organic Chemicals Division as a foreman in 1979 after 32 years of service. He was a charter member of the Manville Ruritan Club and the Manville Community Center and attended each faithfully until ill health prevented his attendance. Prior to his illness his hobbies included square dancing, hunting and fishing, camping and family reunions. He was a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and was active in troop activities during his sons’ scouting careers.

He attended the Holston Valley Christian Church and previously attended Alley’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Manville of which he was a member.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Colonial Funeral Home in Weber City , Va. The family will receive friends anytime at his home in Bristol, Tenn., and at the home of his son, Stephen, in Gate City, Va.

Funeral services will begin at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gary Barnett, the Rev. Paul Lane and Pastor Steve Templeton officiating.

Music will be provided by Jack Necessary and James Wood.

Full military honors will be accorded for SSgt. Templeton during graveside services at Holston View Cemetery , Weber City , Va. , on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

Pallbearers are Joseph Templeton , David Templeton II, Zachary Templeton , Ben Huff, Eddie Huff, Jr., Clayton McDavid, Dwight Lane and Randy Bates. Honorary pallbearers are the men of the Holston Valley Christian Church.

The family extends a special thanks to the men and women of the Mountain Home VA Nursing Home where Mr. Templeton made his home for the last four years of his life.
