In 1950, he enlisted in the Air Force, serving a tour of duty in Korea.During his 20-year career in the Air Force, he worked with the Minuteman II Missile Defense System, specialized in satellite communications, and earned a masters in public administration from Auburn University in Alabama. He was stationed in several parts of the world before retiring with distinction as a lieutenant colonel working for the Defense Communications Agency at the Pentagon.
