Jack Russell Maguire, a Texas historian and author, died Sunday, August 27, 2000, at his home in Fredericksburg.
Maguire, who was associated with the University of Texas for 39 years, was born April 10, 1920, in Denison, Texas, the only child of J. E. and Elizabeth Russell Maguire.
Maguire graduated in 1937 from Denison High School and entered the University of North Texas at Denton. He transferred in his junior year to the University of Texas, at Austin. He was elected editor of the student newspaper, "The Daily Texan." He received his degree in 1944, along with the Outstanding Graduate in Journalism Award from Sigma Delta Ci. In 1946, he married Patsy Jean Horton. In 1950, he moved to Austin become Director of Public Relations for the Texas Insurance Advisory Association. In 1956, he was named Executive Director of The University of Texas Ex-Students' Association, a position he would hold for 20 years. In 1976, he became Executive Director of the University's Institute of Texas Cultures in San Antonio.
After his firs wife died, 1985, he retired from the Institute and moved to Fredericksburg.
In 1986, Maguire married Ann Rodd Quint, who he had know 43 years before in Denison and Denton.
He has written or co-authored nine books, more the 750 magazine articles, and more the 4,000 columns that were syndicated weekly or monthly to newspapers and magazines throughout the United States.
In recognition for his contributions to the heritage of the state, Maguire was commissed an Admiral in the Texas Navy. In 1993, he received the Ima Hogg Award for Historical Achievement from the University of Texas.
Maguire is survived by his wide, Ann; two sons and their wives, Jack Maguire Jr. and Margaret, of San Antonio and Kevin Maguire and Gay, of Austin; two grandchildren, Christopher and Shannon, of Austin; four stepdaughters and their husbands, Sharon and Kerry Stehr, of Bentonville, Arkansas, Genie Ostle, of Southport, North Carolina, Kristy and Herb Hovde, of Lakeville, Minnesota, and Patty Jones, of Fredericksburg; and a stepgrandson, Rex Jones, of Fredericksburg.
Memorial may be made to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg and the Fredericksburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or the charity of choice.
