She is survived by her daughter Lynn (Craig Shaw), son Tom (Sandy), and son Robert (Debbie), by her grandchildren Summer Porter, Josh Griffin, Blake Griffin, Emily Shaw and John Shaw, and by one great-grandchild, Jonah Porter.
Edie worked in the defense industry in Memphis, Tennessee in the early years of World War II and subsequently joined the Women's Army Corps.
Posted to the Pentagon during the war, she was a data entry operator on mechanical computing equipment, the early precursors to modern computer technology. During her service, and while training in Orlando, she met her future husband Bob; they married in February 1946. Bob was a meteorologist with the U.S Navy and his postwar service required that the family relocate frequently to various duty stations.
Edie was the consummate Navy wife, efficiently setting up households around the globe every couple of years, including at Guantanamo Bay, the Panama Canal Zone, Hawaii, Midway Island, and bases on the east and west coasts of the U.S., while raising three children and bonding with other Navy families, some of whom became lifelong friends.
Mrs. Griffin led an active life traveling, doing volunteer work, attending college, taking adult education courses, and spending time with family and friends.
She was a long-time member of the Episcopal Church, most recently the Church of the Advent in Tallahassee. Edie was a talented cook, seamstress, quilter and gardener and always enjoyed hosting social events in her home. She worked tirelessly maintaining the flower beds and vegetable garden in her spacious backyard in Tallahassee.
A warm, vivacious and open-minded woman, Edie will be fondly remembered by her large extended family and by her many friends, especially her devoted neighbors.
In keeping with her dedication to charitable giving, Edie may be remembered with a donation to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Alzheimer's Project of Tallahassee, or a charity of one's choosing.
