Daughter of Enoch & Girzelda (Laxton) Wills.
Mrs. Phoebe Webb, 93, Celebrates Birthday
MULLENS - "Children were raised stricter in my day and time. You weren't allowed to step out of the house at night," Mrs. Phoebe Webb said Thursday, a day after celebrating her 93rd birthday anniversary. Sitting in her favorite rocker beside the telephone, where she finds much pleasure calling and receiving calls, she recalled her "days" and "time" quite vividly. Mrs. Webb, not looking or acting like she is 93, is able to get around with little difficulty. Although the years have decreased her hearing, her ability to remember is as good as most persons 50 years of age. Asked if she wore her eyeglasses all the time, she replied "Mercy, no, I hate the things; never had to wear them 'til here lately. I used to read a lot, mostly my Bible with big print, now I have another one (Bible); one of those new kind and if the print were large enough, I could still read," she said as she pointed to Good News For Modern Man. The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Enoch Wells, she was born on Cabin Creek in January of 1881. She is the only survivor of three brothers and six sisters. Recalling her school days at Pineville, she said she attended through the "eighth or ninth" grade, one of the few exact facts she was unable to pinpoint. Remembering her last teacher, Thomas Cooper, her brother-in-law, Mrs. Webb said, "Teachers were stricter back then, this one was so strict he ran me right out of school." She remembered Henry Martin Farley, another teacher, as her most lenient instructor. She and her husband, the late Cal Webb, had 10 children, 2 of whom died in infancy and 2 after reaching adulthood. She has 6 living children, 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great- grandchild. Although she could live with one of her children, she prefers to stay in her own home. "I have lived in this house more than 50 years. I like Mullens, but I've lived here a long time," she said. Asked about the changes she has encountered through the years, her voice began to tire as she answered. "Mullens has changed a great deal, low prices and low wages when I was young; folks owned their own cows, had their own milk, butter and cheese, also raised hogs and made sausages. Flour was only used at the breakfast meal. Yes (she shook her head several times) many a change." Since the death of her husband she and one of her daughters, Mrs. Bertie Updike, have made their home together. A son, Tom Webb, makes his home in Beckley; Cal lives in DeLand, Fla., Mrs. Bertha Harmon of Princeton, Mrs. Bessie Caldwell of Beckley and Mrs. Blanche Gravely of Mullens. A birthday celebration honoring her on her birthday anniversary was held at the home by her children. Among those in attendance were Mrs. Bertha Harmon of Princeton, Mr. and Mrs. Myron Anderson and son, Chris, Mrs. Peggy Blake of Princeton, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Staton of Mullens and son Rickey, Mrs. Blanche Gravely, Mrs. Jennifer Ash and daughter, Autumn of Mullens, Mrs. Bessie Caldwell, Miss Judy Caldwell, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Stiltner, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Webb and Tonya, all of Beckley, Mrs. Bertie Updike, Mrs. W. C. Neal and Mrs. Jeannette Houck, all of Mullens.
