On the morning of 11SEP1697, Rebecca's mother, Hannah Prescott Rugg (FAG75890665) left Thomas Sawyer's garrison in Lancaster and joined her son Joseph, his wife, and three children for a day at the old home place. That afternoon, Hannah, her son Joseph (FAG187943293), his wife, 3 children, and 14 others were slaughtered and their homes burned to the ground.

In 1692 Nathaniel married Rebecca Rugg (16MAR1673-1715, see "Nathaniel Hudson Family" memory on FamilySearch LZDC-6CW). In 1693 they had a son Nathaniel, then daughter Abigail in 1695. But tragedy struck about noon on 11SEP1697 when about 40 Indians surprised and killed 26 Lancaster, MA settlers, including:
- Nathaniel and Rebecca's young children, Nathaniel and Abigail.
- Nathaniel's parents, Daniel (FAG148390494) and Joanna Hudson.
- Nathaniel's two older sisters, Joanna (age 37) and Elizabeth (age 39).
- Rebecca's mother, Hannah Prescott Rugg (FAG75890665).
- Rebecca's brother, Joseph Rugg (FAG187943293).
- Joseph's wife Mary Prescott Rugg (96YW-CH3) and their daughter Hannah (b.1694) and their infant born in 1696.
After the massacre Nathaniel and Rebecca moved to Billerica, Middlesex Co., MA., where Nathaniel held town office from 1709 to 1719. On 22APR1705, their children were Baptized in the adjacent town of Lexington.
