He graduated from Glassboro High School in 1942. Believing it was his duty to help fight the war, he declined a farming exemption and trained to pilot B-29's.
In 1946 he met Ruth Hummel at Delwood Skating Rink, and within nine weeks had proposed to and married her. Five children were born to them: Nancy [Achilles], Russell Jr., Mulford, Faye [Airey], and Dan. In 1951 he graduated from Philadelphia College of Art and moved his young family into the Pitman home he had designed and built. That year also he accepted employment at E. I. duPont in Deepwater as a structural engineer. Russ's Christian faith grew increasingly important to him about this time. He and Ruth hosted a home Bible study, and he served as lay teacher and leader at churches in Pitman, Barnsboro, and Woodbury. For the past fifteen years, Russell was a member of Joy Community Fellowship Church in Pitman. Russ retired from duPont in 1986, giving him more time to build and repair furniture for family and friends in his "Big Blade Little Shop."
In addition to his wife of sixty-eight years, he leaves behind five children, seventeen grandchildren, eighteen greatgrandchildren, and many friends. "Great peace have those who love your law."
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Joy Community Fellowship, 309 Florence Avenue, Pitman, NJ 08071. Funeral service at 11:00 AM at the church. Interment Cedar Green Cemetery, Clayton. Services under the direction of the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME.
