One of his earliest claims to fame was that he was voted Ft. Wayne's most beautiful baby in 1926. His family moved to Toledo, Ohio where he had a wonderful childhood and told many stories about his adventures with his friends on Circular Drive and on the banks of the Maumee River.

During World War II he became a Marine and served in the South Pacific as part of the Raider Battalion. After a brief courtship he married Elaine Hamilton in 1950. They eloped to Pocahontas, Arkansas. Their marriage was long and loving, lasting 62 years until her death in 2012. Bob worked many jobs early in his career, then settled at Bowmar Instrument Corporation where he was a machinist, toolmaker and engineering administrator. He had fond memories of his coworkers and loved to tell stories about them. He belonged to the Masons, Civil War Round Table and the Crow's Nest Sailing Club.

Family time was very important to him with many vacations being spent on Lake Papakeechie enjoying fishing and the outdoors. After retirement, he and Elaine spent much of their time sailing on Lake Wawasee and Lake Michigan. He made many good friends there along the way. They also enjoyed traveling and antiquing together. Bob was a very talented woodworker and could fix almost anything. He started restoring antique wood and cedar strip canoes in his late 80's and was busy, active, and independent until the end.
