John Marion Vaught, Jr., 92, of Hwy. 90, died Thursday, June 25, 2015, at his residence.
Born in Conway, a son of the late John Marion Vaught, Sr., and Ruth Thompson Vaught, he moved as a child,to the Nixonville/Tilly Swamp area where he spent the remainder of his life.
Following graduation from Conway High School in 1939 and electrical training in trade school, Mr Vaught worked in the Naval Shipyards in Charleston and enlisted in the US Army, Engineer Branch, where he served his country in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Upon leaving the military, Marion and his wife, Elsie Collins Vaught, bought the old Tilly Swamp School property and dismantled the school, using the material to build their business, Vaught's Variety Store. Their store was known as the local gathering place where one could get a haircut at the barber shop, have an auto repaired, purchase groceries, gas,and hardware items, and sit by the heater, chatting with neighbors.
In 1967, the Vaught family closed the store and Marion began work with Lord Electric Company providing electrical installations in the construction of the Grainger Steam Plant in Conway. Impressed by his knowledge and work ethic, Santee Cooper hired him as electrical supervisor for the plant upon its completion. He retired from Santee Cooper in 1988.
Mr. Vaught was a member of the Gideons International, an association of Christian business and professional men who are dedicated to distributing God's Word around the world. He served as Horry County camp leader and SC president; with his wife by his side, he fostered several new camps. A member of "The Greatest Generation," Mr Vaught was active in The American Legion, Post 111, serving as Commander, Chaplain, and Adjutant and was honored as "Man of the Year" in 1977. Mr. Vaught was a member of Tilly Swamp Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, song leader, trustee, Brotherhood director and chairman of building and grounds. He was an adjunct faculty member at Horry-Georgetown Technical College. Often referred to as "the mayor of Tilly Swamp," he believed his greatest honor to be husband, father and PaPa, to his wife, children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers, General James B.
