The Mary and Edmund Morris family homesteaded four 1/4 sections of land (160 acres each), totaling to 640 acres of land on the SE end of the Carrizo Plain in 1889. They also purchased an additional 800 acres of land. The Morris' had three children: Tom, Joe, and Emma.

Mary was born in Kentucky in 1833 (sic 1834) during Andrew Jackson's presidency. She married Edmund Morris in Dallas, Texas in 1853. They moved to Santa Cruz, CA in 1886. They later moved to San Miguel before settling on the Carrizo Plain.

The family built a house on the Carrizo Plain which they called the Home Ranch. They operated a cattle ranch into the late 1890s until they ran into hard times during a severe drought period. The family sold the ranch to the Kern County Land Company in 1900 for $1.25 per acre. Mary Morris died at age 63 in 1896 and was buried on the cemetery knoll. A cousin of Mary and two of Mary's grandchildren are also buried in the fenced cemetery.

A great great grandchild of Mary Morris lived on the Chimineas Ranch adjacent to the Monument until recently. Ownership of the south Chimineas Ranch transferred to the California Department of Fish and Game most recently. Some of the family descendants of the Morris family reside today in the Cuyama Valley.
