Civil War Union Army Officer. He was a 42 years old farmer in Yardley, Pennsylvania during the second summer of the war when he was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company H, 138th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on August 28, 1862. When Captain Lazerus C. Andress died of wounds in November 1863, he was promoted to Captain and commander of the company. Wounded at the October 19, 1864 Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia, he led his command through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out with his company on JUne 23, 1865.
