Funeral services for Robert W. Bell, former general manager of the Metropolitan Utilities District, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at All Saints Episcopal Church, 9302 Blondo St.
Bell, 73, died Thursday at University Hospital. He suffered a heart attack.
Bell, who worked at MUD for 36 years, was serving his second term as a director of the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District. He was elected in 1990 and was the board chairman from 1993-95.
He began his MUD career in 1952 as an industrial sales engineer. He was appointed general manager in 1972, becoming the first MUD general manager to rise through the ranks. Bell retired in 1988.
He was affiliated with numerous Omaha organizations and institutions, including Clarkson Hospital, the Urban League of Nebraska and the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. Bell also was a fund-raiser for United Way of the Midlands and the YMCA.
A South High School graduate, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was a combat officer in World War II and the Korean War. He earned a bachelor's degree in engineering at the University of Omaha, the forerunner of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, in 1963.
