Russian Prime Minister, Diplomat. Primakov served in various posts in the Russian government before serving as prime minister in 1998 to 1999. Born in Ukraine, in his early career he worked as a journalist and frequently was sent on intelligence missions for the KGB. Afterwards Primakov worked in both the academic and scientific world. He became foreign minister in 1996 and served until September of 1998. Primakov was described as a "tough but pragmatic supporter of Russia's interests" during this time. In September 1998, he became Prime Minister of Russia. During his tenure, Primakov made some tough economic reforms and was against 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. As the nation's economy stayed sluggish, President Boris Yeltsin fired him on May 12, 1999. He would continue in both politics (serving as an advisor to Vladimir Putin at one point) and academia until his passing.
