Edward Martin Hill, 82, of Raleigh died Monday afternoon February 17, 2014 at home peacefully surrounded by his two daughters and wife after a long illness in Raleigh, NC.

Memorial service will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 1725 N New Hope Road, Raleigh, NC 27604. Visitation with family and friends will follow.

Mr. Hill was born on December 22, 1931 in Washington, NC second child of Marion Genevieve Martin Hill and Edward Ormond Hill both from Washington, NC.

He was also predeceased in death by his late wife Dorothy Louise Cahoon Hill; mother, Marion Genevieve Martin Hill; sister, Jacquelyn Bassett; sister Marion W. Elliott and brother, Michael Ormond Hill.

He was the owner of Hill's Sporting Goods Inc. in Raleigh which was started by his late father Edward O. Hill and uncle Gordon Hill in 1932 over 80 years ago. Originally located on Wilmington Street and then the family business later moved to 1720 Capital Blvd. He started working with his dad at Hill's Inc. at a very young age by helping customers out with hunting and fishing supplies and selling bikes, boats, motorcycles and parts. Throughout the years he continued to strive to provide a high level of customer service and sell quality name hunting and fishing products to the public and uphold the standards of his late father. He was also an accomplished pilot, Mason, avid fisherman, hunter and captain of his boat as he loved the open water.

Mr. Hill is survived by his wife, Deanna Merrell Hill; daughter, Heather Hill; daughter, Eydie Hill Hartwell and son-in-law LT. Lawrence Allen Hartwell; stepson, Troy Robert Owens and daughter-in-law Suzy Owens; stepdaughter, Dena Merrell Owens; brother, LTC(R) John Courtney Hill; nephew, Forrest Edward Bassett; niece, Patsy Ann Duke; grandchildren, Alexis Lee Watkins, Allie Louise Watkins, Davis Martin Hartwell, Mason Edward Hartwell, Dorothy Ann Hartwell, Marion Grace Hartwell; step-grand children, Lindsay Virginia Owens, Robert Rhys Owens, Niklas Christoph Franke and Emma Merrell Franke.

The family will receive friends after the 2:00 pm. service at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on February 22, 2014.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Saving Grace Animals for adoption.
