Born in Pickens, SC, he was the son of the late Joseph Oscar Hayes and Mabel Wynn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Eulala Sawyer, his second wife, Margaret Cash Hayes, and his son, Joseph Gary Hayes.
Cecil was a rural mail carrier in Tryon, NC for 32 years until his retirement. He attended Tryon Second Baptist Church, Tryon, NC, where he was saved and baptized, and Green Creek First Baptist Church, Columbus, NC. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and loved all sports. Cecil loved spending time gardening.
He was a veteran of the US Navy where he was honorably discharged in 1946 as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class. Cecil earned the American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon (1star), Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
Surviving are his daughters, Teresa H. West (Steve) of Columbus, NC, and Rhona H. Wingo of Duncan, SC; step-children, Charles Cash (Tammy) of Green Creek, NC, Terry Cash (Patsy) of Clemson, SC, Darrell Cash (Karen) of Sunny View, NC, and Beverly Arledge (Bobby) of Green Creek, NC; grandchildren, Shannon Robinson, Desiree O’Sullivan, Laura Miller; 4 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be Monday, June 29th at 2:00pm in McFarland Funeral Chapel with his nephew, Rev. Tommy Hayes officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral chapel from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm prior to the funeral service.
Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, NC with military rite provided by the Polk County Veteran Memorial Honor Guard.
