Melvin Marvin Hard, 76, of Sioux City died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at his residence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Craig Bock and Krishen Persaud officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Mr. Hard was born June 26, 1927, in Sioux City, the son of Fred P. and Alma L. (Nelson) Hard. He was a lifelong Sioux City resident and graduated from East High School. He served in the U.S. Army with the 7th Infantry as a military policeman during World War II, achieving the rank of corporal.

He married Arlene Leffler on April 2, 1955, in Sioux City. He worked for McKesson and Robbins for 27 years until it closed. He then worked for the Sioux City Police Department doing maintenance until 1992, when he retired.

He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He was a champion horseshoe player and enjoyed fast and slow pitch softball. He started playing slow pitch at the age of 58. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially pheasants since he once got three birds in one shot.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Hard of Sioux City; three daughters and their husbands, Vicki and Bruce Lynch of Louisville, Ky., Linda and Bob Jackson of Sioux City, and Laura and Daniel Linduski of Ogden, Iowa; a son and his wife, James and Patti Hard of Sioux City; a brother, Edward Hard of Sioux City; 16 grandchildren, Melanie, Shawn, Tami, Kristi, Sara, Misty, Trisha, Kyndra, Ashley, Jacob, Destiny, Devon, Danielle, Sharaea, Amanda and Skylar; and six great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Imogen, Gage, Thomas, Michael and Chelsey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harry, Bill and Fred Hard; and a sister, Myra Miller.

Pallbearers will be Gus Demetroulis, Tom Eilades, Dick Hulce, Edward Leffler, Marvin Manker and Richard Wilen.
