When Isham Belcher I, came to Franklin, Virginia, the Scotch – Irish Hodge / Hodges family was already well established. They were actually thought to be the first settlers of Franklin. Franklin county is located in the "Blue Ridge" foothills, the front range and eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains.

Franklin county was also the site of Ft. Blackwater, a fort barracking continental troops, built in the 1750's. The area was also occupied by Sioux Indians.

It was in Franklin county on January 3, 1791, that Isham married Martha Hodges, granddaughter of Robert & Elizabeth Higgins Hodges, the earliest settlers. Daughter of Isham Hodges. Isham Belcher was not content to stay in this area and by 1796, he already moved to Mercer, WV, then Wythe, Virginia. Eventually he moved on to Tazewell, Virginia, where he and his first, Martha Hodges, and second wife, Nancy Blankenship raised their families.

Isham II was a farmer amassing more 76 head of assorted livestock by 1804. Hogs, sheep, beef….. By 1808, Martha died. Almost all of her children were minors. Isham was remarried by 1809.
