He was the son of John R. Young and Mary Barclay Young.
On June 12, 1905, he married Marie Gruner Kupfer in Rockville, Maryland.
They were the parents of two children.
In The Sunday Star published Sunday, February 13, 1966, Mrs. Marie K. Young of 1851 Columbia Road NW is listed in the obituary of her sister, Julia A. Kupfer. The same address is associated with her daughter, Mary Barclay Young and is listed as Mary's address in the obituary of her father.
On April 27, 1926 as John Russel Young, he married Nettie G. King at Gettysburg, Adams, Pennsylvania.

John Russell Young was born April 2, 1882 in the District of Columbia. His father, John Rankin Young was a founder of the Philadelphia Evening Star, chief of the Washington Bureau of the New York Tribune, a United States Representative from Pennsylvania and Chief Executive Clerk of the United States Senate. An uncle, John Russell Young, for whom he was named, was a well-known Civil War newspaper correspondent, Minster to China and later Librarian of Congress. His maternal grandfather, John M. Barclay, was journal clerk of the House of Representatives for 30 years. He attended public schools in the District of Columbia and in Philadelphia including the Philadelphia Manual Training School and the Industrial Art School of Philadelphia. In 1901, he began his career in journalism as a reporter for the Philadelphia Evening Star. He spent two years with the Philadelphia Inquirer and in 1905 returned to the District of Columbia to join the staff of The Washington Post. In 1907, he became a reporter for The Star. In 1920 after two years as Assistant City Editor, he became The Star's White House correspondent for 20 years until his appointment to the Board of Commissioners in 1940. He was appointed by Democrat President Franklin D. Roosevelt even though he was a Republican. In 1926, President Calvin Coolidge offered to appoint him, but he was ineligible as he was a resident of Maryland. He served 12 years on the Board of Commissioners and held the title of Commissioner President. He helped establish the National Press Club and was active in the White House Correspondents' Association, where he was a past President, serving in 1922 and 1928. He was a member of the Gridiron and Alfalfa Clubs, the Overseas Writers and Variety Clubs, the Air Force League, the Board of Trade, the Society of Natives, the Association of Oldest Inhabitants, the Columbia Historical Society, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Kiwanis, Pentalpha Lodge No. 36, F.A.A.M., Rathbone-Superior Lodge, No. 29, Knights of Pythias and the Elks Club. He died at the age of 84 on Saturday, July 2, 1966 at his home, 1834 Jefferson Place Northwest of arteriosclerosis. He was predeceased by his wife, Nettie Griffith, whom he married in 1926. On June 12, 1905, he married Marie Gruner Kupfer in Rockville, Maryland. Survivors included two children from his first marriage: Mary Barclay Young of 1851 Columbia Road Northwest and John Russell Young Jr. of 1745 N Street Northwest; a stepdaughter, Mrs. E. Ross [Virginia] Adams [formerly Mrs. Carl Shepherd] of St. George Island, Maryland and her daughter, Mrs. Barbara Van Dusen of 4606 Chestnut Street, Bethesda, Maryland. Services were at Gawler's Funeral Home at Wisconsin Avenue and Harrison Street Northwest. Interment was private. In lieu of flowers, donations were requested to the Metropolitan Police Boys Club.
