US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served the State of New York's 24th (1969 to 1973), 10th (1973 to 1983) and 19th (1983 to 1988) Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives. The son of Italian immigrants, he joined the New York City Police Force in 1942 and during the course of his career at that capacity, he found himself in harm's way often. He killed two criminals during different altercations and was recipient of the Medal of Honor for Valor from the department and earned more than two-dozen other honors. He attained his law degree and retired from the force in order to establish his own law firm. During his tenure in Congress, he will be remembered for his leading efforts to obtain legislation to fund the National Law Enforcement Memorial. Charges of corruption ended his political career in 1988 and the result would be a twenty-six month period in prison.
