Husband of Mabel Conley Smith.

Roy L Smith was born at the east edge of Nickerson January 28, 1887; his father worked in the flour mill in Nickerson and the family attended church and school here.
Roy earned his way through Southwestern College by painting signs; he graduated in 1908 and the same year married Mabel Conley, his classmate at Nickerson.
His ministry was begun as a circuit rider in Sumner County; years later he served the first Methodist Church in Los Angeles, then the largest Methodist Church in the world. He wrote syndicated newspaper columns, a number of books and for several years was editor of the Christian Advocate. He was often referred to as "Mr. Methodist."
In 1989 Roy L Smith was recognized as one of the 40 Methodists and United Methodist leaders honored for outstanding achievement in Christian Evangelism between 1949 and 1989.
Dr. Smith died in San Bernardino, California April 20, 1963, funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Nickerson with Rev. Russell Calcote in charge. He was buried at Wildmead Cemetery along side his wife.
