John was born in Scotland to David Young and wife Susan Rae. He was baptized 03 May 1840 in Saint Vigeans, Angus, Scotland and appeared on the 1851 census for that location. He arrived in America with his father and siblings about 1852 and they all settled in the La Valle, Sauk County, Wisconsin area. He married Jane Slatter (daughter of Andrew and Jane) on 29 April 1858 in Reedsburg, Sauk County, Wisconsin. The only record of his burial I have been able to locate is the inscription on the left side of the Young family monument in Oak Lawn Cemetery in La Valle.
