Mrs. Elizabeth Fitzgerald Garner, 90, of Emmitsburg, Maryland, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2015 at the Kline Hospice House. She was the wife of the late William A. Garner, Sr.
Born December 17, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Julia Topper Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Garner was a graduate of St. Joseph’s College and a member of St. Anthony’s Shrine in Emmitsburg. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Wally Byam Caravan Club International.
Mrs. Garner is survived by her children Leah Garner of Emmitsburg, Cynthia Haley and husband Leo of El Paso, TX and William Garner, Jr. and wife Joyce of Thurmont, grandchildren Sharon Harvey and husband Nicholas of Ranson, WV, Krista Garner, Rebecca Garner and Taylor Garner of Thurmont and Frank Haley and Jack Haley of El Paso, TX, her sisters Josephine O’Rourke and husband Edward of Augusta, GA and Anna Jeanne "Jane" Virbal of Greensburg, PA, sister-in-law Beverly Fitzgerald of Emmitsburg and brothers-in-law Thomas Arcidiacono of Hagerstown and Hugh Rocks of Berwyn, PA. Many nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by a son James Garner, her sisters Mary Julia "Peggy" Arcidiacono, Patricia Rocks and Dorothy Coleman, sister-in-law Ann Gregg, and her brothers Richard and James "Jef" Fitzgerald and brothers-in-law John Coleman, Paul Virbal, Paul Gregg and John Garner.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont on Friday, June 26, from 1-3:00 pm. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am, Saturday, June 27, at St. Anthony’s Shrine, 16150 Saint Anthony’s Road, Emmitsburg. Friends may visit with the family from 9:00 am until time of Mass. Interment will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
