Warm friendships help couple
through cold winter days.

Compiled from news services
The warmth of friendship has prevented a long, cold winter for Elmira Fredlund, 64, stricken with Parkinson's disease, and her husband, Carl 74.

The Vancouver, Wash. couple had burned all the oil in their furnace tank and couldn't afford to have it refilled. On some days the only way they could stay warm was to huddle in their heated water bed.

However, after learning of the couple's problem, seven persons brought firewood, someone donated 100 gallons of heating oil and one person who was going to sell a house offered instead to rent it to the Fredlunds. They plan to move in after the first of the year, Fredlund said.

The Fredlunds had used their last drop of heating oil in March. One day the temperature in the house, heated only with a portable electric heater and fireplace, dropped to 51 degrees.

The house's furnace is "hard on oil", said the landlord, who requested anonymity.

They rented the place last year after Mrs. Fredlund fell on the steps of their old apartment in St. Luke's Episcopal Church where Fredlund is a janitor.

They wanted a place that would be cheaper to heat but didn't find one.

Until friends heard of their plight they sat and "shivered", Fredlund said.

Fredlund said they burned 613 gallons of oil from December through February, when oil was 45.9 cents a gallon. It now is 83.9 cents a gallon from their retailer.

"That is more than a fellow can afford", he said.

The Fredlunds don't qualify for help from a federally funded emergency energy-assistance program scheduled to begin in mid-December because they make $700 a month and would have to make less than $469 each month to qualify, said a Clark County Community Action Agency spokeswoman.
