John Algernon de Courcy Lyons was the fourth child of Alfred de Courcy Lyons, a doctor in Yatton, Somerset, and Carew Elwell. He was educated at Bradfield school. He married Doris Ada Campbell Young on 16 Jun 1909 at St Peter's Church, Oystermouth, near Swansea. They had five children. He was commissioned in 1915 into the 3rd Bn Prince of Wales Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment) and served as a Captain in Mesopotamia and Ceylon during WW1. He was awarded an MC for his actions at River Adhaim during the campaign in Mesopotamia while attached to the 6th Battalion, The Prince of Wales Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment). After the war he worked for a coal export business. He died in Langland, Oystermouth.
