Mary Margaret was born a "perfect" child according to Minnie, her mother. But Mary, as a toddler around the age of 2 yrs., convulsed and held a fever for an extended time. By the time her Uncle, Dr. John Anderson Mahaffey, (Minnie's brother)arrived by horseback, it was said that Mary had sustained brain damage. From that day on, Mary needed constant care. After June of 1930, her mother Minnie (Mahaffey) Burch was unable to give Mary the care she needed since Minnie was in need of care herself and a visiting nurse suggested that Mary be placed in the Orient Institute for Feebleminded, in Pickaway County Ohio. Mary would live out the rest of her life there, where she died from tuberculosis. Minnie never forgot about Mary and would often visit Mary at the institute. Minnie and Mary Margaret are buried side by side in the Millville Cemetery in Ohio and share the same stone.
