Helen Angell, 93, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, in Mercy Iowa City following a brief illness.
Mrs. Helen Angell was born March 20, 1911, in Waucoma. She was the daughter of Dr. Walter H. Fox and Bess Peebles Fox. She was a graduate of Waucoma High School and the University of Iowa, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta, Mortar Board and Phi Beta Kappa.
She was a teacher at West High in Waterloo and Whitefish Bay, Wis. In 1943, she joined the Military Welfare Service of the American Red Cross, serving with the 91st General Hospital in Oxford, England, and the 130th General Hospital in Ciney, Belgium. In 1946, still with the American Red Cross, she was sent to the Panama Canal Zone, where she directed programs in Army Service Clubs.
She married Charles Angell in 1947 at Corozal, Canal Zone. After several years of army service at posts in the U.S., France and Germany, the couple retired and returned to Iowa City, where they have lived since 1953. They shared the home of Helen's mother, Mrs. W.H.Fox, until her death in 1970.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Angell was a supporter of conservation and animal welfare organizations. She was especially interested in the Johnson County Humane Society and its foster care plan.
There are no services planned. The body was cremated. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service is handling her arrangements.
