Cleo Wendell Van Buskirk was born 21 Dec 1899 in West Grove, Davis County, Iowa; son of George Washington and Mary Ann "Annie" (Edinger) Van Buskirk.

Cleo was first united in marriage 15 Mar 1933 in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa with Inza Loeta Parrott; daughter of Charles Elmer and Edith Ethel "Dolly" (Kibler) Parrott. This marriage apparently ended in divorce.

Cleo was next united in marriage 27 Apr 1927 in Bloomfield, Davis County, Iowa with Helen Mae Wichhart; daughter of Jacob "Jake" and Florence (Kurtz) Wichhart. This marriage also ended in divorce.

From newspaper accounts it seems that Cleo led a troubled life. It was during the depression and times were hard. Cleo was arrested for drunkenness and disturbing the peace, battery of a game warden, and larceny. On the larceny charge he was sentenced to a maximum of 5 years in the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa. He was 38 years old when he entered on 06 Mar 1939. Prison records show he was 5'10", 144 pounds, had a medium light complexion, dark blue eyes, dark red hair and a 5th grade education.

Cleo was paroled 12 Feb 1941 after serving nearly two years of his sentence. His parole was revoked after he absconded on 27 April 1941. He was returned to the prison on 01 Jan 1942 where he served out the remainder of his sentence; being released on 24 April 1943.

Cleo passed away 04 Oct 1965 in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa at the age of of 65 years. He was laid to rest in Orleans Cemetery in Moulton, Appanoose County, Iowa.
