AABERG, Theodore Edward "Ted" Died on June 21, 2015, after a long and difficult struggle with heart failure and related complications. Ted's life will be celebrated Saturday, June 27, with a visitation and funeral service at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Mankato, Minnesota. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at the Scarville Synod Lutheran Cemetery in Scarville, Iowa. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Ted was born on September 16, 1952, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, and lived his childhood years in Scarville, Iowa. He attended Bethany Lutheran College and Mankato State University, both in Mankato, Minnesota. In 1978 he completed his Master of Divinity Degree at Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary, was ordained as a minister and served several years at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Later, he taught classes and worked as a librarian at Bethany Lutheran College, and as a librarian at Concordia Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He excelled academically, earning graduate degrees from Mankato State, Princeton, and Harvard universities. From 1988 to 2010 Ted was a researcher for Harvard University, holding positions at its Kennedy School of Government, School of Public Health, and School of Law. He also was a volunteer golf coach for the Special Olympics program in Boston, a cause near and dear to his heart. Ted relished his time in Boston where he made many long-lasting friendships. He belonged to several social groups including softball and bowling teams, and he was a social member of the Sons of Italy. He returned to Minnesota frequently for holidays and special occasions to visit family and friends. He had many hobbies including woodworking, writing, and family history research.
At the time of his death he was working on two books, his memoir and an anthology of family letters. Ted had a strong faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was a beloved son, brother, and uncle with a kind and gentle spirit. His time with us here was far too short, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Ted was preceded in death by his father Theodore, mother Melvina, and nephew, Ronald William Mehlberg. He is survived by his siblings Sarah, Marie, Jonathan, and Joel, and nieces Jennie, Shawna, Abby, and Clair. Blessed be his memory!
