Composer. He was a two-time Academy Award winner who was primarily known for composing film scores. In all, he earned 10 Oscar nominations for such films as 'Aliens' (1986), 'Field of Dreams' (1989), 'Braveheart' (1995), 'A Beautiful Mind' (2001), 'House of Sand and Fog' (2003) and 'Avatar' (2009). His two wins came in 1997; one for original dramatic score and the other for original song, 'My Heart Will Go On', from that years best picture winner, 'Titanic'. Horner, whose father was two-time Oscar-winning art director and set designer Harry Horner, spent his formative years attending the Royal College of Music in London, then returned to L.A. and earned his bachelor’s degree in music at USC and did post-graduate work at UCLA. He went on to score such films as 'The Lady in Red' (1979), 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan' (1982), 'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock' (1983), 'Glory' (1989), 'The Rocketeer' (1991), 'Patriot Games' (1992), 'Searching for Bobby Fischer' (1993), 'Jumanji' (1995), 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' (2000), 'Troy' (2004) and 'The Amazing Spider-Man' (2012). He composed music for over 100 films, won six Grammys, two Golden Globe Awards, three Satellite Awards, three Saturn Awards, and was nominated for three British Academy Film Awards. In October 2013, he received the Max Steiner Award, an award given for extraordinary achievements in the field of film music. Horner died while piloting his Tucano turboprop aircraft.
