John Baumgarten, 61, Cherry Valley, was pronounced dead on arrival at Swedish-American Hospital at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 1963.

Born May 26, 1902, in Rockford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Baumgarten. Lived 20 years in Cherry Valley, coming here from Rockford. Married to the former Helen Parmelee in Rockford, March 22, 1930. Employed as personnel manager by Rockford Screw Products for more than 20 years. He served two terms as mayor of Cherry Valley, beginning in 1945, served in the state legislature in 1938 and 1939, was a former member of the Tebala Shrine Oriental Band, and a member of Tebala Shrine Temple, Cherry Valley Masonic Lodge, Belvidere Shrine Club, Jesters, Sveas Soner Singing Society, Lyran Singing Society, and the Winnebago County Zoning Board of Appeals.

Survivors include: his widow, Helen; three sisters, Mrs. Vance Little, Madison, Ga.; Mrs. William Carlson, Rockford, and Mrs. G. Harry Anderson, Rockford; and three nieces.

Services at 1:30 Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1963, in Fred C. Olson Mortuary. Burial in Cherry Valley Cemetery.
