The grave marker of Nancy, "WIFE OF W. B. STANDIFER," states she was AGED 60 YEARS old when she died July 20, 1891. She could have been born in either 1830 or 1831. Her reported age did not advance in ten year increments through the censuses of 1850-1880. (This is a not unusual thing for people living in frontier areas in the 1800s, whether due to a lack of concern about timekeeping or lack of concern about giving correct information to nosy strangers is hard to determine.)

Nancy Smith and William Bailey Standifer, were reported to have been married September 30, 1847, in Bastrop County, Texas. This and much of the following family information were provided by a well researched genealogy entitled Descendants of Anderson Standifer, which notes "This genealogy is a compilation of the research of George Sprouse, Harry Standefer, and many others."

According to the above report William Bailey and Nancy Smith Standifer had 13 children, all born in Bastrop County, Texas:
THOMAS JEFFERSON STANDIFER, b. June 09, 1848;
SARAH JANE STANDIFER, b. November 22, 1849;
MARGARET ELLEN STANDIFER, b. March 09, 1851;
MARTHA EMILY STANDIFER, b. October 04, 1852,
HENRY TAYLOR STANDIFER, b. October 02, 1854;
LEMUEL E. STANDIFER, b. October 02, 1856;
JOHNSON R. STANDIFER, b. November 11, 1857;
ALBERT STANDIFER, b. April 03, 1859;
EDGAR EDWARD STANDIFER, b. July 09, 1861;
WALTER A. STANDIFER, b. March 31, 1864;
JOSEPH ERASTUS STANDIFER, b. July 06, 1866;
ALICE CORENA STANDIFER; and
SAMUEL BAILEY STANDIFER, b. June 21, 1872.

Nancy's husband, William Bailey Standifer was a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto. He came to Texas in 1829 with his mother and siblings and were among the original settlers in Stephen F. Austin's Little Colony, which consisted primarily of what is now northern and western Bastrop County, Texas.

Gravesite Details

The nature of the black and white marble is such that the smaller, more shallow insciptions are very difficult to read.
