In 1003, Lambert is first mentioned as a count of Leuven, on the occasion of his designation as guardian of the abbey of Nivelles . He also gained custody of the abbey of Gembloux . Through this guardianship he was responsible for the protection of the monasteries, but then he also gained territorial control over the vast abbey domains. In 1007 it is mentioned that Earl Lambert has come back into favor with the Emperor Henry II . By Lamberts marriage Gerberga , daughter of Duke Charles of Lorraine , he came into possession of the county Brussels . The allocation of the duchy of Lorraine to Godfrey I of Verdun gave Lambert openly with the graves of the Ardennes in conflict. This led to the Battle of Florennes (1015), where Lambert I was killed.
In 1005 Lambert supported Baldwin IV of Flanders in his attempts to mark county Valencijn conquer. In 1012 the emperor appointed the Godfried Childless Duke of Lower Lorraine . This was against the wishes of Lambert, this feature is desired. The day came that Godfrey the city of Leuven beleaguered but he had to give that company without success. Lambert then collided with Balderik II of Loon , bishop of Liege . It had decided to build a castle in Hoegaarden . This was not to the liking of Lambert I, the castle saw as a threat. When the bishop refused to put the construction stop, Lambert raided the Liege area. The bishop knew only by compromising his vassals to persuade him to stand in the battle, but in 1013 became still settled in Hoegaarden. Partly due to desertion of part of Liege troops Lambert knew the bishop to inflict a bloody defeat. This victory enabled Lambert also the county Bruning Red (southeast of the county Leuven to annex). In 1015 it came again into conflict with Duke Godfrey. Lambert went with his brother Reinier against him, but died at Florennes.
In order to restore peace between the Rein Irish (Counts of Leuven and Bergen) and the house of Verdun were contracted marriage alliances. Lambert II Balderik of Louvain married Oda of Verdun (daughter of Gozelo I of Verdun ) and Reinier V Bergen married a daughter of Herman Ename (which was about that time Duke of Brabant).
The chroniclers paint a very negative picture of the warlike Lambert I. They accuse him to have no respect for women, children and sanctuaries. Not only because of the Carolingian dowry of his wife Gerberga (county Brussels), but also by violence and intrigue, he managed to expand his territory.
