BENNINGTON - Albert J. "Bert" Racicot, 80, formerly of Windsor, died Oct. 24, 2006, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, following a long illness.
Born in Bennington, Oct. 19, 1926, he was the son of Philip and Alda (Betit) Racicot.
He received his education at the former Bennington High School where he was a member of the Class of 1945 and played football, basketball and baseball.
Mr. Racicot served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
After his military service, he received a bachelor's degree from Arnold College in Bridgeport, Conn., and his master's degree in education from Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y.
He married the former Mary Patricia Riley on Aug. 13, 1960, in Bennington.
Mr. Racicot began his teaching career in Waitsfield, Proctorsville and South Royalton, before moving onto Windsor High School, where he served as a science teacher and guidance counselor for 25 years until his retirement in 1985. He also coached soccer, baseball, football and basketball. He was a member of the National Education Association and the Vermont Chapter of the NEA. He was a counselor with Green Mountain Boys State at Norwich University in Northfield for 40 years. For several summers, he ran the playground at Memorial Park in Bennington and was a lifeguard at the "Y" pool.
He was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and St. Francis of Assisi in Windsor where he served as a Eucharistic minister and a member of the parish council. He was a life member of American Legion Post 25 in Windsor and Post 13 in Bennington. He had also been a volunteer driver for RSVP in Windsor.
In earlier years, he played semi-pro football for the Bennington Shamrocks and fast-pitch softball for the Waites Mobil team.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Pat Racicot of Bennington; five sisters, Thelma Sausville, Theresa Long, Mary Brochu, all of Bennington, Helen McKenna and Anne Deslaurier of Surfside Beach, S.C.; two brothers, Thomas Racicot of Killeen, Texas, and Raymond Racicot of Bennington; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
Mr. Racicot was predeceased by six brothers and sisters, Victor Racicot, Josephine Higgins, Florence Stemp, Carmel Pleasant, Robert Racicot and John Racicot.
The funeral will begin with a prayer at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, 2006 at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, followed with the Mass at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church.
Burial will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to VNA & Hospice of Southwestern Vermont Health Care or to Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, to be used for the Bell Tower Restoration Fund, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201
