Doland - Evan A. Barz, 88, of Doland, S.D., died Monday, July 3, 2006, at his home in Doland. His funeral will be Thursday, July 6, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Doland. Reverend Warren Rhodes will officiate. Burial will be in the Doland Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-8 p.m., with the family present from 7-8 p.m., at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield.

Evan Arles Barz was born Oct. 9, 1917, in Webster, S.D., to Harry R. and Anna (Gramberg) Barz. Evan spent his early years in the Frankfort area and moved with his family to Mellette, where he completed high school.

Evan enlisted in the United States Army on Aug. 13, 1941, and served his country in the South Pacific until his discharge on Dec. 2, 1945. He began working for Northwestern Public Service Company at Mellette in 1946.

Evan married Bonnie Beebe July 17, 1948. He transferred to Doland in 1958 and worked for NWPS as District Superintendent.

Evan was active in several community organizations, both in Mellette and Doland, including 62 years continuous membership in the American Legion of which he was a member of Post #69 at present time. He was also a member of Paul A. Schleher VFW Post #2755 in Redfield and the Doland Senior Citizens. He was also active in the United Methodist Church in Mellette before transferring to the Doland United Methodist Church where he served as a board member and treasurer for several years. He was a past Boy Scout leader, a past member of the Volunteer Fire Department and the Redfield Lions Club. Evan enjoyed refinishing furniture and raising a vegetable garden, growing flowers, fishing and hunting.

Evan is survived by his wife, Bonnie Barz, of Doland, and one son, Larry (Tammy) Barz of Keizer, Ore.; two grandchildren, Kristin and Matthew. He is also survived by two sisters, Evelyn Adkins of Summit Lake, Wis., and Esther (Paul) Kolz of Garber, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Harry, and one sister, Amanda Hawkins.
