Austin Barker Dies at 72
Austin C. Barker, 72, a rancher in Natrona County for the last 46 years, died suddenly of a heart attack Thursday evening at his ranch home 20 miles west of Casper.
Mr. Barker came to Casper in 1906 from Condon, Ore., trailing a band of sheep. He and his brother, Lew Barker, jointly operated the Stone ranch under lease for a time, and later Austin Barker purchased the ranch, which he operated continuously until the time of his death.
Mr. Barker was born Jan. 22, 1880, at Athens, Me. He spent his boyhood on a farm and was connected with the livestock industry his entire life. Mr. Barker never married. He was one of a family of eight children, all of whom are deceased except Lew Barker of Casper.
Nieces and nephews surviving include Guy E. Barker, Mrs. Phil Johnson, Mrs. Caroline Earnshaw, Mrs. E. J. Scherck, Mrs. Bryan Tobin, and Lewis Barker, Jr., all of Casper, and Mrs. Don Varnell, Midland, Texas.
Mr. Barker was a member of the Methodist church.
Services will be held in Casper early next week, with the Horstman-Gay Mortuary in charge, but detailed arrangements have not been compelted.
