ROCKVILLE — James Donald Poling, 90, formerly of Rockville, passed away at 4:50 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2006 in Meadows Manor East in Terre Haute.

He was born March 18, 1916, in Vermilion County, Ill., to James William Poling and Bertha Belle Boose.

He graduated from high school in Marshall, Ind., in 1934, where he played basketball. After graduation, he worked at the Turkey Run Inn, where he met his future wife of 68 years, Mary Katherine Hixson, whom he married on March 30, 1938, in Rockville.

He received a medical discharge from the U.S. Army in 1943. He was a machinist at Allison's in Indianapolis, and Indiana Gear Works in Richmond, a salesman for Calvert and for several car dealerships, and he had owned & operated Don's Liquors in Rockville.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Karen Kuebler and her husband Terry of Evansville, and Patricia Lohrmann and her husband Greg of Rockville; four grandchildren, Julie Davis and her husband Rick of Evansville, Matt Kuebler and his wife Shawna of Belleville, Ill., Ehren Lohrmann of Rockville and Shannon Paul BeczKiewicz and her husband Paul of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and two great-grandchildren, Daley Lohrmann and Gwendolen Kuebler; one sister, Mary Riddle of Indianapolis; one brother-in-law, Maurice Hobson and his wife Louise of Dade City, Fla.; four nephews, Bob Riddle of Indianapolis, Jim Lee of Illinois, John Lee of Rockville and Bob Youngblood of Columbus; and one niece, Marsha Callaway of Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Grace Nelson and Anna Lee; one brother, John Poling; and two nephews, Ray Nelson and Bill Miller.

He was a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 48.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Monday in Butler Funeral Home in Rockville. Burial is in Bethany Cemetery in Marshall, Ind., with military rites by Parke County Veterans. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services Monday.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parke County Community Foundation or the Rockville Public Library. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.
