LURAY – Robert W. Venable Jr., affectionately known as "Charlie," 91, of Luray, peacefully departed this life on June 14, 2015.

Robert, son of late Robert W. Venable and Lelia Evans Venable, was born on Sept. 23, 1923, in Staunton.

Robert grew up in Staunton and was educated in the Augusta County School system. Immediately following graduation, he was drafted to the United States Army during World War II. Robert served his country well as a technical sergeant in the 3669 Quartermaster Truck Company in the South Pacific Island of New Guinea. In 1946, he was honorably discharged with the following commendations: American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal World War II. Later that year, he was given the opportunity to acquire and master the skillsets of carpentry and tile setting.

Robert's longstanding career with Stanley Tile enabled him to travel the country. His projects would run the gamut of universities/colleges to residential homes. Throughout the years, Robert was known for his keen sense of detail, mild disposition and uncompromising tendency to give orders. These attributes translated to his personal life as well. Many members of the surrounding counties benefited from his craftsmanship and friendship. To know him was to truly love him, and you had a loyal friend for life.

Those who remain to cherish his memory include his stepson, Carroll, grandchildren, Tasha, Jamal, Eboni, Tykia, Eddie, Whitney, Jamilia and Chani; his great-grandchildren; special companion, Shirley; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Charles "Chipper" Venable; daughter, Deborah Harris; and stepdaughter, Dyane Franklin.
